Abstract
<i>Aspergillus flavus</i> (Link ex Fries), <i>Aspergillus niger</i>, and <i>Paecilomyces</i> sp. were found to be responsible for the biodeterioration of leather. The process of biodeterioration is facilitated by leather components such as protein and lipids, which serve as substrates for the induction and activity of fungal enzymes like acidic, alkaline, and neutral proteases, isocitrate lyase, FDP aldolase, glycerol dehydrogenase, etc., leading to microbial growth and proliferation, and hence, deterioration. Of the various antimicrobial compounds tested, phenyl mercuric acetate was found to be most efficacious, having LD50 value of 0.12 mg/100 ml.
