A review of the literature is followed by a brief description of the available low-load hardness testers, and the method of operation used in this survey. It appears that the absolute low-load hardness values obtained vary considerably, because of the large number of uncontrolled variables. The need for a standard method for preparing and testing specimens and for reporting results is shown.
