Abstract
Crystal-like substances observed on the surface of two oil paintings, R. Koiso's <i>Rafu (Nude)</i> and N. Koide's <i>Tsubaki (Camelia)</i> were analyzed by an electron probe x-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) and an x-ray microdiffractometer. These substances were observed as transparent granules and they did not appear to dissolve in water or dilute acids. In the substances on <i>Rafu</i>, zinc, magnesium, potassium, lead and silicon were detected by EPMA. PbSO<sub>4</sub> and (NH<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>Zn(SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>. 6H<sub>2</sub>0 were identified by an x-ray microdiffractometer. In the substances on <i>Tsubaki</i>, zinc, magnesium and silicon were detected by EPMA, but no corresponding compound was found by an x-ray microdiffractometer. EPMA showed that the paint fragments and grounds of the two works contained no crystal-like substance. The above results indicate that crystal-like substances observed on oil paintings are likely to consist mainly of complex sulfates of zinc, magnesium etc. depending on their origins. The mechanism of their formation is not yet clear. -- AATA
