The second part of the paper (see <i>AATA 17-578) deals with the painting technique, materials, and structure of the two late 13th-century sculptures. Pigment analyses were determined by optical and chemical microscopy tests, cross-sections, x-ray diffraction, and isotope analyses; solubility tests, gas chromatography, and IR spectroscopy were used for the medium analyses. The ground of both sculptures consists of chalk, most likely in animal glue impregnated with egg tempera. The coccolith assemblage of the chalk indicates in the case of St. Olaf that the chalk may have been imported from England, whereas the chalk on St. Paul originates from sources in northern Germany and/or possibly in Sweden or Denmark. The paint medium is a drying oil. Pigments are azurite, copper green, organic yellow, red lead, vermilion, organic red, red iron oxide, charcoal black, lead white, plus gold and silver foil. Isotope analyses show that the lead pigments most probably originated in England. Variations in the gilding technique are described. The final varnish is an egg tempera. -- AATA
