The large crucifix (second half of the 13th cent.) from the now demolished stave-church at Feiring in south-eastern Norway displays an almost intact polychromy; the greatest damage has been sustained by the cross. A description of style and painting technique is given with emphasis upon the unusual features in the decoration of the cross. The condition is identified; an explanation of the conservation and cleaning process and of the relatively extensive recon struction decided for the cross is given. Painting materials were: azurite, ultramarine (?), copper green, organic yellow, yellow iron oxide, red lead, vermilion, organic red, red iron oxide, charcoal black, lead white, plus gold and silver foil. The paint medium is a drying oil. The ground consists of chalk, most likely in animal glue and possibly impregnated with an egg tempera. An egg tempera is also applied as a final varnish. -- AATA
