Water vapor permeability measurements using a permeability cup and detached films, water absorption, water resistance and flexibility tests, have been carried out on a series of varnishes based on various alkyds with or without phenolic resins. Increasing phenolic resin content reduced the permeability. Water vapor permeability measurements correlated well with performances in service on wooden panels, but water resistance was not a reliable guide. -- AATA
