Numerous defects can arise in washable fabrics which can be classified by source and type, e.g. faults as a result of mistakes during manufacturing, mechanical damage, biological damage and damage from incorrect treatment during home laundering. The various sources and their causes are described with the aid of illustrations. Suggestions are made for the prevention of damage. -- AATA
