Restoration revealed several stages in the artist's development of the final composition. Later restorations are described. X-ray radiographs revealed artist changes. Microscopic examination confirmed progressive layers. After removal of discolored varnish and repaints, the picture looked unbalanced. The decision making process for the inpainting is described.
