Abstract
Experiments in glass tubes show that pressure exerted by sodium sulphate crystals is due to crystal growth and not to volume increase in the solid state. The presence of the anhydrous salt causes supersaturation of hydrated salt. Clay expansion in contact with sodium salts is the mechanism of breakdown of clay-containing limestone.
