A method of lining paintings, developed by G. A. Berger (17-1322), was designed to eliminate the pressure of foil upon the paint layer; the Department of the Conservation of Paintings and Polychrome Sculptures at the Copernicus University, Torun, substituted a water binder (fifty percent water emulsion of Osacryl with four percent methylcellulose in a 1:2 ratio) for the Beva 371 as a tight airproof coat on the back of the painting. With this procedure it is not necessary to cover the whole facing of the painting with foil. Drying can also be controlled. Use of this method on an 18th century painting Madonna with Child is described. See also AATA 18-1437.
