Conserving wet wood by means of a freeze-drying method consists in the sublimation of ice in vacuum, i.e., converting ice into gas, bypassing the ice-to-liquid phase. Objects are placed in a 5-15 percent water solution of PEG-400 for a period of two weeks to several months, depending upon the objects' condition and thickness. The objects are then subjected to freezing at a temperature of -26°C for at least 48 hours. After freezing, wooden objects are transferred to a Danish-made freeze-dryer where sublimation occurs until the ice is completely removed. This method was used in the Central Marine Museum in Gdansk to preserve a few hundred wooden objects retrieved from the wrecks of the Solen and W21 and the results were satisfactory.
