Abstract
Radiation polymerization was selected as the means to obtain a polymer material useful for conservation work. Studies were made on the parameters of radiation polymerization of a number of monomers and polymers. A select group of products was thoroughly examined, with particular attention paid to the properties important for accomplishing the task; adhesion, hardness, elasticity, color, smell, hydrophobization, permeability of water and vapor. Properties of the preparations were compared with Acryloid B72, a standard polymer often used in art conservation. In some instances the properties obtained were better in the case of the standard. The permeability of the polymers was examined, even though this method of polymerization permits the polymerization to occur directly on the object being treated, and thus it is not necessary to dissolve the polymer in advance. See AATA 13-928.
