Abstract
Reports the condition and restoration of an early 16th-century Umbrian tempera painting on wood. Work involved consolidating and restoring the painted surface, and the wooden support of which the boards had separated causing paint flaking. The surface was protected with Japanese paper, the support tented with Xylamon as biocide and the rear consolidated with Paraloid B-72 acrylic resin in nito solvent. (Editor's note: This is an Italian term for a mixed hydrocarbon solvent of less than 45% of a mixture of xylene, toluene, and amyl acetate.) The wood was filled with wooden wedges of the same species, the boards were readhered, and two sliding crosspieces were attached to the wood. A mixture of dimethyl formamide, water-butylamine-dimethyl formamide mixture, water-ethanol-acetone was used to clean the paint which was rinsed with turpentine. Bologna gesso and rabbit skin glue were used to replace missing ground; inpainting was done with watercolors. The whole painting was varnished.
