Abstract
A microcomputer has been used to analyze chemical constituent data from various kilns of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) and from the Jingdezhen kiln sites, China, between the years 907 and 1795 AD. The database covers the amounts in each sample of the oxides of silicon, aluminum, titanium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and other trace elements. The aim was to investigate the relative proportions of china stone and kaolin in each dynasty in more detail than had been previously researched. The methodology is detailed: algorithms employed were of two statistical types: cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The chief conclusions are: 1) Song Dynasty kilns show a clear grouping into a Northern Group and a Southern Group; 2) Jingdezhen porcelain shows a clear seriation of the dynasties, with the Yuan Dynasty showing a different use of materials, probably caused by migration of potters from the north of China.
