Abstract
A ceiling fresco in the Casino dell'Aurora, a palace in Rome, known as Pluto, Neptune, and Jupiter, is being consolidated and cleaned. A description in GiovanPietro Bellori's 1672 book, The Life of the Painters, described a painting commissioned for the palace by Cardinal De Monte, and executed by Caravaggio (1569?-1609). Removal of repaint has revealed a technique which experts find to be more characteristic of Caravaggio than the pretreatment appearance.
