Seven new kinds of adhesives used in conservation for artistic objects, i. e. funori (a sort of Japanese seaweed glue containing galactane as a major component), an animal glue, HPC90SH9000, AC3444, a mixture of HPC3000 and AC3444, Binder-18 and Paraloid B72 in xylene, were tested in the practice of conservation for a Buddhist polychrome sculpture of the Edo period, including protection of its surface against flaking and chalking, and re-attaching damaged areas. As a preliminary experiment before the practical work, test pieces made of Japanese cypress boards painted with shell white or ocher by means of the above adhesives were studied for their adhesiveness and coloring behavior. Funori and a mixture of HPC3000 and AC3444 gave better results than HPC90SH9000 and Paraloid B72. Results from scientific investigations, details of practical procedures and a trial of new techniques according to the Italian tradition are also described.
