Abstract
This paper covers current research on the materials and techniques of Constable's oil paintings. The first section describes the development of the project, with its general aims, the methods of scientific and technical examination in use and its progress to date. The second section deals with the technical examination of Flatford Lock and Mill 1812 and one of its preliminary sketches. New information concerning the evolution of the final image is discussed in the light of current art historical theory.
