This paper describes a simple, low maintenance system of climate control for an egg tempera painting on panel. Drawing on past experience with the use of microclimates, a method of adapting the existing gilt frame was devised and buffering material (Art-Sorb silica gel sheets) which met a number of criteria was selected for mounting behind the portrait. Provision for regular monitoring of the humidity inside the frame without removal from display or deframing was made using a Vaisala humidity probe attached to a Cambridge Instruments Squirrel Meter/Logger.
