Abstract
The use of enzymes in the conservation of two paintings is described. One had been lined with an adhesive made of wheat and rye paste and turpentine; this adhesive was removed with amylase. Pepsin was applied to the paint layer to treat a mold problem. The second painting had a varnish of egg white; egg white, casein and oil were identified as the medium of some of the overpaintings. Pronase E removed the varnish and overpaintings. A thorough knowledge of enzymatic reactions is necessary when using enzymes in the conservation of paintings. -- AATA
