The reasons for the establishment of ASTM Sub-Committee D01.57 are presented and its scope, the permanence (or otherwise) of historic/prehistoric artists' materials, the effect of the growth of technology in recent years on artists, sellers and manufacturers, and the law in relation to lead in artists' paints are discussed. -- AATA
