Abstract
The Moessbauer effect (ME) technique was used to distinguish among the states and forms of iron present in ancient Islamic pottery from different Arabian regions (Qatar, El-Medina in Saudi Arabia, and Egypt). IR spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility techniques were used for identification of the groups present in each type of pottery, and for confirmation of the ME results. The ME and IR spectra of Qatar and El-Medina pottery were nearly identical and differed from those of the Egyptian pottery. The presence of five or less iron components in the ME spectra in Qatar samples and only two iron components on the average in the Egyptian samples may relate to the type of clay used or to the firing process. -- AATA
