Abstract
Polyester/cotton fabrics having pure and resin finishes were Accelerotor-abraded for varying periods of time to observe the progression of fiber, yarn and fabric damage. Fibers were identified by a differential staining technique which enabled their relative positions in yarns to be observed. Photomicrographs revealed great variance in distribution of polyester and cotton fibers within yarns; it was not possible to identify a particular pattern in relation to any given level of abrasion. Types of fabric deformation observed were fiber debris, voids, displacement of yarns, and pills. Types of damage observed in both cotton and polyester fibers were fibrillation and forked fiber ends. Additional types of damage in the polyester fibers were bulbous stubs, fused ends or globules, jagged cut ends, tongued fiber ends, transverse cracks, enlargement along the fiber diameter, and separation into fibrils within the fiber length. Mechanisms of breakdown are discussed. -- AATA
