A series of magnifications -- namely, the unaided eye, low magnification stereoscopic binocular microscope, high magnification microscope, and the scanning electron microscope -- was used to answer diverse questions: what the causes of color changes were, what technique was used to apply gold highlights, and what the source of grey patches under overpaint was. The information obtained from these magnified images was related to the information obtained from microchemical tests, gas-liquid chromatography, laser microspectral analysis, x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, and x-ray radiography.
