Abstract
Many current practices in conservation and restoration are performed without adequate knowledge or consideration of the mechanical stresses they induce; otherwise treatments can aggravate deterioration and cause damage to the paint layer. If realistic data are available, the finite element model is capable of predicting the magnitude and distribution of stresses in oil paintings caused by common stimuli. The model is explained in detail. See AATA 19-956.
