Abstract
A controlled atmosphere furnace was specially designed for the conservation of large marine artifacts removed from the Mary Rose. The hydrogen furnace successfully stabilizes salt-affected wrought and cast iron objects. Hydrogen reduction removes commonly encountered chloride species below 500°C, but sodium chloride is sublimed off above 800°C. The effect of the temperature on the microstructure of the artifact is unavoidable; thus microstructure is recorded before and after treatment. A low-viscosity epoxide resin is the ideal consolidant for the highly porous graphite matrix remaining on cast and wrought iron. See AATA 19-956.
