Abstract
The analysis and treatment of black spots on bronzes in museums are discussed. The spots were found to be copper sulfide crystals, and cultures showed that mold of the cladosporium family could grow in the presence of the crystals. The spots can be simulated under lab conditions by exposure to hydrogen sulfide. Sodium dithiolates have been found to dissolve copper sulfides by forming a complex with the copper.
