Methods used to identify amber imitations are reviewed with infrared spectroscopy being the most reliable method to distinguish true amber. Deterioration of amber and past conservation methods are briefly outlined. The author warns that most conservation materials in use will interfere with the infrared spectrum and thus render this authentication technique useless. The exception to this problem is paraffin.
