Abstract
It was hypothesized that a mildly alkaline rinse enhances the resistance of cellulosic textile fibers to thermal degradation at low temperatures and stabilizes the textiles by neutralizing the carboxy acids. However, the results indicate that a rinse is not more effective than simple washing in the deterioration of aged textiles. Calcium hydroxide treatment does prolong the life of new textiles. The testing procedure is described. Carbonyl groups are responsible for discoloration. See AATA 19-395 and 19-956.
