Abstract
Report on the treatment of four contemporary papers with an acetylation and graft copolymerization process. The four papers were an alpha cellulose with 25% cotton, a bleached writing paper, magazine paper, and newsprint. Acetic anhydrate was used for acetylation. Methyl methacrylate in a 9:1 water solution was used in the graft copolymerization process. Conclusions show that after natural aging of 16 months the magazine and the newsprint samples showed the greatest loss of color, strength, and brightness. Discoloration and loss ofbrightness can be controlled with the acetylation or graft copolymerization treatments. Acetylation cannot prevent loss of strength, but the graft copolymerization prevents loss of strength. See AATA 19-956.
