Abstract
Previous studies by David Hon suggest that the phenolic compound of lignin is responsible for color changes in groundwood papers. Acetic anhydride is tested as an alkali-catalyzed acetylation treatment of lignin containing papers. By chemically altering the phenolic component of lignin through acetylation it is believed that there was less color reversion in papers artificially exposed to UV radiation. Bleached and deacidified papers were also tested with the acetylation process and the results reported. See AATA 19-956.
