Abstract
Organic pigments that change color on deacidification were studied. The spectra of watercolor washes of these pigments were measured in acid (pH 2) and alkaline (pH 12) conditions. Five deacidifying agents were prepared and each brushed on a sample watercolor wash. Resultant color changes are often due to the presence of hydroxyl groups in the conjugated structure of the natural pigments. The color changes should be reversible with a change to lower pH.
