Classification of tile and wall slab fragments is possible by criteria based on both raw materials and technique of manufacture. Phase analyses were performed visually by microscope, as well as by infrared spectroscopy. Determination of elements was by x-ray fluorescence and atomic absorption analysis. Two regional and several local groups were established for the region of the rivers Saar and Moselle; information about the place of manufacture and transportation of tiles was deduced.
