Using the Northeast Document Conservation Center as a particular example, the article briefly sketches background and development of regional conservation centers, their philosophy, and functions. Noting their dual role as self-supporting treatment centers and serviceoriented educational and advisory resources, it outlines funding problems and suggests a national strategy.
