Abstract
Electron beam curing of coatings is effective for radical polymerization processes but not with epoxy based formulations that typically cure with ultraviolet light; also, electron beam curing requires an inerted atmosphere (free from oxygen). This difference in curing requirements stems from the way energy is transferred in the two curing methods. Under ultraviolet curing conditions, a disproportionately high amount of ultraviolet light is absorbed at the coating surface, ensuring the formation of a sufficient concentration of initiating radicals to overcome the inhibiting effect of oxygen on polymerization. In electron beam curing, the concentration of initiating radicals tends to be more uniformly dispersed throughout the bulk of the coating. -- AATA
