It is not always possible to apply epigraphic criteria in dating pottery finds, and the risk is that estimates made on a subjective basis may turn out to be arbitrary. This study is a detailed survey of technical and scientific methods which, if applied to the structure and composition of the material, can supply more objective answers to problems of a historical and archaeological nature.
