Abstract
A bronze <i>dotaku</i> (bell-like object) excavated in 1965 at Ikubo, Mikkabi in Shizuoka Prefecture was investigated by several methods. X-ray diffraction indicates that atacamite (basic copper chloride), which is the cause of bronze disease, is not found in the corrosion products. Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry shows that the <i>dotaku</i> is made of 95. 2% copper, 3.2% tin and 4. 1% lead. Lead isotope ratios show that the lead used for the <i>dotaku</i> is of Chinese origin. After cleaning with a soft glass-fiber brush and a bamboo spatula, the <i>dotaku</i> was immersed in a 3% solution of benzotriazole in ethyl alcohol for stabilization. Then it was impregnated with an acrylic resin solution (Incralac) for consolidation under reduced pressure. The <i>dotaku</i> was restored by assembling fragments, using epoxy resin adhesive. -- AATA
