Abstract
Two 18th-century sources mention soundboard ornaments painted in détrempe. Other contemporary reference explains this term to mean pigment with animal glue, gum arabic or gelatin as a binder. Water-soluble paint has been found on a number of authentic instruments from the 17th-18th centuries.
