Abstract
A study of water-borne and xylene-borne alkyd resins applied to samples of Eastern white pine demonstrated that the former caused swelling of cell walls and improved surface-checking resistance of the wood in the short term. The presence of organic co-solvents in a water-borne coating accounts for this temporary swelling. Scanning electron micrographs illustrate the condition of the wood during testing. -- AATA
