In 1976, two divers discovered artifacts from a village of the Ertebolle period (4000-2000 BC) at Tybrind, which had gradually sunk two-three meters below sea level. An underwater rescue operation sponsored by the Institute of Prehistoric Archaeology at Aarhus University developed methods to suit the conditions. The finds included a skeleton of a young woman and a child (Carbon-14 dated to the early part of the Ertebolle period), a boat with a place for a fire, a paddle with a carved and painted design, bows and arrows, pottery lamps and containers, antlers made into axes, a bone fishhook with string attached, and pieces of fabric. -- AATA
