Abstract
Detailed examination of the way in which marble is attacked by sulfur dioxide in polluted air and the reactions that can lead to stone decay. Based on the following pattern: 1) absorption of SO<sub>2</sub>, 2) surface distribution of the gas absorbed, 3) spread of the absorbed part of the gas inside the stone, 4) study of the oxidization of the sulfur dioxide absorbed. A summary of the findings is given at the end of the report. -- AATA
