Abstract
Following an historical glimpse of the origins of vernacular architecture in the Sudanese Sahel, the author deals with the problem of conserving traditional constructions. Today, these are often derelict, owing to the fact that they do not fulfill modern functional conditions. This has led to fatal consequences for their conservation, since without daily maintenance by the inhabitants, the buildings fall into decay very quickly. -- AATA
