The authors address the problem of hazardous waste disposal for small-amount generators, such as conservators. Current federal regulations allow less than 1, 000 kilograms per month to be disposed of in common garbage systems. However, some states have laws which are more restrictive, the most stringent being those of California, Rhode Island, and Louisiana, with no exemptions. The authors outline safe, legal methods the conservator should use for the disposal of solvents, detergents, acids and alkalis, bleaches, and ethyl ether. They describe in detail how to collect, containerize, and store hazardous waste if it is to be removed by a waste management company. They suggest agencies to contact for advice on disposal.
