This paper discusses the characteristics of materials and techniques which must be recognized in cases where restoration of works on paper is indicated. For this purpose one theme from the field of graphics has been chosen: <i>Vedute</i>, city or landscape views, with examples from the 18th and 19th centuries. Sheets bearing resemblances to one another are compared and the following techniques differentiated: watercolor or gouache on paper monochrome or line etching as background for color; monochrome etching with line and shade; polychrome etching from one plate with or without color added polychrome etching from more than one plate.
