An overview of the purposes and difficulties of chemical applications in the conservation of library materials. Discusses in some detail chemical degradation of cellulose, methods of diagnosis and treatment, criteria for decisionmaking and long-term prediction of results. Several examples of paper and ink deterioration, examination, and chemical treatment are described and graphically illustrated: the connection is shown between visible decay and chemical background.
