Abstract
Technical examination, cross-sectional analysis, and x-radiography have been used to clarify the evolution of a Turner oil sketch through three stages of composition, to its present form. Such compositional changes are unusual in Turner's oeuvre, even among sketches. The pigments used in the painting, and the unusual lead white and egg priming are described.
