Abstract
A detailed account derived largely from contemporary descriptions of the practices used in the early steel industry in the area of Austria between Eisenerz and Steyr is given. This industry was based on bloomeries and finery hearths and lasted from about 1625 to 1881. Selection, reheating and piling are described fully. -- AATA
