An account of experiences in the treatment of a large number of paleolithic wooden artifacts excavated in Southern Rhodesia. Freeze-drying under vacuum was not satisfactory. Dehydration with trimethyl carbinol (tertiary butanol), followed by freeze-drying, is costly and timeconsuming, and not altogether satisfactory in this case. A method using Carbowax, which is simple and economical, gave good results.
