Abstract
The Egyptians used many different alloys or copper, lead, tin, zinc, etc. having different properties and these were employed for different uses. The writer believes he has now found evidence for a technique of coating a bronze casting (in this case a bronze situla of late date) with a different alloy of the same metal. The coating was thought not to be the result of corrosion; core metal and coating were subjected to spectrographic analysis. This analysis showed a high proportion of lead in the coating only. It was suggested that the lead-copper alloy coating was produced by dipping the casting in the molten alloy. The surface was re-chased and repolished afterwards to simulate silver. No coating was found on the inside of the situla though it covered the rim and the bail handles. -- AATA
