Abstract
A method for conserving waterlogged wood is proposed. The wet wood is immersed in a water solution of Arigal C, a melamine-formaldehyde condensation product. The object is steeped in the Arigal C solution until it sinks, which is an indication that the Arigal C has diffused through the wood. Catalyst is then added to the solution, causing the Arigal C to become insoluble by polymerisation within the wood. The wood can now be dried. Average shrinkage is about 0.25 per cent across the grain, 0.1 per cent along the grain. No elaborate apparatus is required. Expenditure of labour is low. There is no danger to the weakened wood structure at any stage. Fixing before the water is removed obviates risk of sudden shrinkage and cracking.
