Abstract
In the present article we describe the testing programme used to determine several characteristics of the materials applied in the consolidation of domes of the Basilica de la Vergen de los Desamparado, in Valencia, such as the physical-mechanical characteristics under real conditions and the application processes. Likewise the methods followed for this structural consolidation are described. The whole process was achieved with the use of non-destructive methods of characterization and intervention, including: specialized photography, colorimetry, analytical techniques (MO, AI, SEM/EDX, HPLC, GC/MS, UV-Vis, PH), metal detection, multi-frequency ray emission, ultrasounds, thermography, endoscopy, and robotized inspection. These studies have been undertaken by the Instituto de Restauracion del Patrimonio at the UPV from 1999 to 2003.
